See a sport physician or physiotherapist if you have any question as to whether there is any injury. The shoulder contains many delicate muscles that make up what is known as the rotators (cuff) and these can be easily overstressed and injured. Rest is probably the most important element to rehabilitation of the injury. Ice works well. Use snow, frozen peas or crushed ice for about 10 minutes at a time. Make sure it is really cold and that it conforms around the shoulder. Anti-inflamatories like aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen (my fave) can all help but you need to let it heal. If you are a work out addict, use this time to work on your legs. Once you return to working out, pay particular attention to this injury. Stretch, warm up, and avoid movements that cause pain. Avoid behind the neck shoulder presses, and pull downs (or chins) behind the neck as these rotate the shoulder joint too far and don't really aid muscle building. Ice down your shoulder after each work out. Do higher reps, good form, lighter weight. Concentrate on the feel and continuous tension. Also, scaption presses, where you press dumbells held at 45 degrees forward may help some people avoid that clicking in the joint that some people experience. Take care of yourself and let this injury heal fully, then go back to exercising using light weights and full range of motion. Concentrate on getting the most resistance out of the lightest weights.
