I am looking for a cheap protein source.I am going to consume 150 gms of protein but most protein sources are expensive. Most protein powders cost around 2 cent per gram which would cost me $3.00 a day or$21 a week to get my daily protein requirment. To me this is alot money to be spending on protein.I did find a protein powder that was 12.00 for 800 gms(1.5 cent per gram) but cannot find that site know more.Is their any protein powders or foods that would cost around 1 cent-1.5 cent per grams of protein. Also take a look at my other post"weightlifting and stunted growth.I will be looking forward to your help.

How about eggs? Buy the 5 dozen cartons... it's cheaper in bulk. Most 5 DZ cartons are about 4 bucks and some change... which means that you'll be spending less than a penny a gram on quality protein.

Thanks Big al for the response, but i am kind of lost.Do you suggest i eat the whole egg or just the egg white.
I know that 1 or 2 whole eggs are alright but to much can give you bad cholesterol plus loads of fat. Here are list of the amounts of protein for whole eggs and egg whites___
5dz eggs=60 eggs times 4 gms of protein per egg white equals 240 gms of protein for $4.00+change
5dz eggs=60 eggs times 7 gms of protein per egg equals 420 gms of protein for $4.00+change/.from my chart it seems you are talking about whole eggs but maybe you can be more clearer.

I mean whole eggs. Eggs do contain good amounts of cholesterol, but they also contain lecithin, which is a "friendly fat" that emulsifies cholesterol. If you're trying to put on weight, I wouldn't worry about eating the yolks. If you're worried about the fat content, eat some or no yolks. Some nutrition stores and wholesale food outlets (and some bakeries and hotels) may also carry powdered egg whites. It's VERY cheap, but you'll have to buy a large amount, since they don't sell them in small amounts.
Also, you can usually find those big bags of chicken at most grocery stores for 30 to 40 cents a lb. I still buy my chicken in bulk like that :)
I see how you think that it will cost $3.00 a day. But you're passing up one thing. You aren't just going to eat 150 grams of protein powder a day are you? You'll be getting extra protein from regular meals too.
Anyway, eggs are a good protein source. And don't worry so much about the cholestrol so long as you're lifting weights. I'd say it's safe to take in 10 whole egss a day. Not for life of course, but for a while. The FDA would have a hissy fit saying you'll drop dead instantly but since when has the FDA been correct regarding bodybuilding nutritional requirements.
Other than that milk is a really cheap protein source.
And you can get a cheap protein powder from www.bodybuilding.com. The EAS Simply protein (I like chocolate) is like $35 for a 5 lb container.
Good luck.

I use optimum nutrition's 100% Whey. It's about $30 for 80 servings of 22 grams.
I agree with Stubborn. Check out netrition.com They have good pricing and I recently bought some whey from them - $27/5 pound tub
got to www.prosourceonline.com i have found these guys to be pretty cheap.
Yes Stubborn, optimum is good. I bought a 2lb tub for only 14.75 at the health food store. A 5lb is around 25. I have had great results with it. I was about 135lbs when i started weight lifting. After taking the protein for 2 weeks i gained a good 10lbs with a good portion of that being muscle.
I am with Big Al and Jethro here. Eggs are the best! Eggs are the most perfect food you could ever eat --Complete amino acid profile and the best biological value. The only inconvienence is you have to cook em unlike protein powders.
Don't fall for that bullshit about eggs being bad because they are high in cholesterol. I have been eating eggs every morning for the last 16 years, my cholesterol levels are perfect. The only reason I would cut out some of the yolks is to lower the calories when I am trying to get really lean.
Bad cholesterol(i.e. LDL) does not come from eating too much fat, it comes from eating to many simple sugars. You need cholesterol in your diet for normal hormone production.

Al is right about eggs. For powders, try proteinfactory.com...great prices on very high quality proteins....good service, too...
Why didn't anyone mention tuna fish? Tuna is a good cheap source of protein. Around 32 grams in a 6oz can and it only cost about $.45 a can. I think this is a very good source of protein. I could be wrong. If you are worried about fat then get the tuna that is packed in spring water rather than oil.
Actually Tuna, Chicken, Turkey, and Eggs provide a good source of protein. Check the Whole Food store, the carry liquid egg whites already processed. I buy them all the time.
