View Full Version : A Psychological Test

This is a genuine psychological test. It is a story about a girl. Whilst at the funeral of her own mother, she met this guy whom she did not know. She thought this guy was amazing, so much her dream guy she believed him to be, that she fell in love with him there and then. A few days later the girl killed her own sister.
Question:What is her motive in killing her sister? Stop and think for a minute before reading further.
The obvious answer, Mr Bundy? She was hoping that the guy would appear at the funeral again.
If you answered this correctly, you think like a psychopath. This was a test by a famous American psychologist used to test if one has the same mentality as a killer. Many arrested serial killers took part in this test and answered it correctly.
If you didn't answer correctly - good for you. If your friends hit the jackpot, may I suggest that you keep your distance.

Having recently seen a comedy short titled 'Patty Burns', I believe there is another possibility.
Patty has difficulty meeting people and is lonely. On the evening news, she sees a story about a house fire and how all of the neighborhood had congregated. She lit her house on fire and mingled with her neighbors. The fire, which she intended only to cause minor damage, ended up consuming most of the building and she ended up homeless.
Patty was a textbook case of a condition of which I, unfortunately, can not remember the name. The key characteristic is that the afflicted person seeks attention in very unusual ways. In Patty's case, it was lighting her house on fire. Maybe the girl suffers from the same affliction?
Another possibility is that the girl has severely stunted cognitive capabilities. That is, she has the IQ of mayonnaise.
The way in which the question is set up is very good and would be useful in detecting a certain set of thought patterns. That it can easily be presented as a riddle makes it even more effective; how hard would it be to ask such a question while waiting for the lawyer? It'd be similar to a lie detector test (they are only about 70% accurate) and would help determine resource distribution in a case.
10 cool points to you for bringing such an interesting piece of work here, twatteaser. You may redeem them for alcoholic beverages of your choice at your local drinking establishment; be sure to not mention my name ;)

Thanks MechaBlue! That means a lot coming from a man who amazes me with the knowledge that you have in your brain.
Would this disorder by Munchasen by Proxy syndrome? Named for Baron Munchasen from that movie like a decade plus ago. The rap singer eminem's mom suffers from this. She would hurt her kids and then look for the neighbor's sympathy. Weird I guess!
I am a psych student amongst my soon to be three degrees. What's your background?

Hi twatteaser
There was a short explanation of it after the short but I can't remember too much of it (it was only 10 lines or so). I do think 'Munchasen' was mentioned but a more formal name was used as well. I didn't know any specific instances of the disease (until now).
It's interesting to see how only a slight change in normal human behavior could result in such behavior. The need for attention is something that nearly all people have (though some will not admit this). A few wrong neural connections and the need could easily corrupt normal behavior and result in such odd behavior.
I've got a background in programming which lets me see things a bit differently than most people; a certain mental process comes with the territory.

That's cool!
I just picked up Psych around Xmas 2000 with my first class. Since then I have had Basic 1 and 2, Abnormal, Educational, Developmental, Child, Women's, And Social. I am taking Adolescent, Addictions <only drinking and drugs, no sex part :( >, and Stress this fall.
SO I am new to this to say the least. But always looking to learn a thing or two wherever and whenever I can.
I enjoyed Social Psychology the most cause it explaon complience and peer pressure and liking and disliking. Many examples of making a good person bad through a few easy steps. The professor tells on the first day, with my course you could start your own cult over the summer If you want. I was like "Kick Ass"!

TT,
I'm not sure that it can't be spelled any other way, but I have always seen it spelled "Munchausen." And while the character did appear in a movie, he was an 18th century creation of somewhat disputed authorship, the chief candidate being a fellow named Raspe. The Adventures of Baron Munchausen was a series of stories written as lies, that the public would know were lies. They were written as a parody of another series of stories that were currently being published. They were not expected to be believed - that was the point - which is where the analogy with the psychological syndrome named after the character breaks down.

Denetee Thanks for the information. I have heard of the term before and had it explained to me, but never explored it in my class. I hope to see it in a higher level course (300 to 400 # psych classes).
Well, I learn something new and more detailed each day. Are you an English major or maybe a minor? Thanks again! TT

I think I dated Patty Burns!
Anyway, I'm glad to say I failed the test.
The way I took it was that she fell in love with the guy and they hooked up from there...in which case, she wouldn't have had to kill her sister to see the guy again because he was already with her.
My sappy romantic side must be showing this morning.
Yeah...

My first thought was that it was her sister's husband or boyfriend and maybe she had never met because they lived in different towns. So she killed her sister so they could be together. Does that make me psycho? :o)

.
The girl thinks with no regard for others saftey or lives in the example. She is completely egotistical in her drive. The bond of blood with her sister is zero compared to her looking at this ideal guy. She reasons this guy must be a friend of the family somehow. Instead of taking the route of asking who he is from the others at the funeral or even initiating contact with him by talking to the guy at the grave side. She reasons in her mind this guy will return with another death in their circle to bring himback to a second funeral. By thinking in such disturbed ways is the hallmark of a socio-pathic personality.
Did you guys get it now? or do I have to explain it better for you. i tried to not throw a ton of psycho-bable your way in the explantion.

TT,
First of all, I only viewed it as a riddle. And gave a logical reason why she would have killed her own sister. Secondly, I did "get it" and need no more explanation but thanks for the offer. Oh yeah and by the way......it's not a real test, it's an urban legend. Check out this link.... http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/hoaxes/sister.htm

Scalf,
Your not that crazy. Though, I would take a very good guess that you have some form of fascination with your penis. HAHA, just kidding! I guess we all do, cause we are all here on this forum.
I found this "test" on EHOWA like months back and liked the tidbit that it was. I could never find this test when asking about it to my college professors. I know why now.
Viewing the test as a riddle is cool. We all work different ways. I must admit that people love to try and diagnose each other and themselves constantly. An example, "Oh my god, you washed your hands four times today! You have OCD"! I do see people trying these little quizes to attempt to figure the other person out. Just look at the dating world where we constantly develop our own little lab experiments of something we heard, watched, or observed. I do this when out at a bar or a club. I guess I am a people watcher. I do like the site you pointed out and do agree that you really can't judge a person for one answer to some weird question even if it is an urban legend. I am know looking over the site for the college sex links and stories.
I hope my explanation didn't come across as heavy handed. I looked it over and I was just trying to explain the probable theory behind it, since I have it posted here and at Thunder's with some bites in the form of responses. It wasn't my intention to sound that way, but the computer screen only prints the words placed on it. Not the warmth of the situation. Maybe it is just my paranoia surfacing. Hey is this a test too? LOL!
Anyhow Kudos to you for your quick research! Very impressive! Well Happy Holidays to you! TT

Hey,
Wasn't trying to slam you or anything. Just thought you were sounding a little condescending. I am a people watcher and tend to try to "figure" people out by their actions and mannerisms. I'm always up for a good discussion too.
Happy Holidays to you as well, and as the English used to say when I partied with them, No Worries!

Thanks! I did reread my words and saw that the tone I intended did not come forth as I desired. I guess my mind is losing it after all these term papers and exams. Still got two left. Ug! Oh well my semester is almost done.
So Scalf, my fellow people watcher, perhaps we could start up a thread on some of the things we observed and our own little personal rules of thumb for interpeting them? Would you be willing?
I will pick up a few books on body language and try and learn something new and of greater depth with it. I also like to read aboult NLP and all this crazy kino stuff they talk about on sosuave and the DJ Bible. Do you have any experience or familairity with this material? I hope to get some time to read all the books and site over my break. Some of the shit on the site is super corny and cheesy, but there are some diamonds hidden in the tirds.
I hope to hit South Street in Philly this break for some people watching too. Nothing beats applied, no matter who much theory you know. What's good down your way for people watching?

Scalf,
What's up? How is married life down South? Can we debunk any more misleading and innacurate Psych tests? How about the color, animal, tree shit?;)

Hey,
things are good, just need more sex as you can see in the other thread. I thought about you the other day, someone emailed me that same riddle again. Just been slammed with work and working on our house. No time for anything really. How about you?
