Could someone guide me through this? I really do suck at computers. I think I had too many emails in my inbox and my computer had a heart attack.

I keep getting this message when I try opening my Microsoft(R) Outlook 2000 on Microsoft Office:

"Unable to open your default email folders. Errors have been detected in the file C:\MyDocuments\Outlook\tommy.pst. Quit all mail-enabled applications, and then use the Inbox Repair Tool."

ok, heres my non official opinion: copy the file tommy.pst into a safe place, then delete the origional, then try to load up outlook, if it loads go to the inbox if something pops up saying inbox repair toolkit then use that, otherwise quit and copy the backup of tommy.pst back where it was and wait for someone elses opinion.

So I duplicate the tommy file and hide it away. I kill the original and then start the email program back up fresh and then download the old saved duplicate messages and start cleaning the hell out of the box I guess.

give it a go, its very hard to give someone advice on anything if you cant see their problem, people describe things in differant ways.

This happens a lot when you have tons of messages that aren't deleted. Mailboxes in Outlook have a size limit so that if you don't archive or delete messages every once in a while, you're mostly screwed. I believe the size limit is 2 GB, which is a couple of years of not deleting any mail for most people.

Microsoft does offer a utility to chop up the mailbox, but you will lose all of the emails that were contained in the part of the file that was deleted.

It is the only way that I know of to fix the problem, though.

Good Luck

So I never get too bombarded with mail until I went hogwild on Yahoo groups for like everything. Bad Move! But hindsight is 20/20. First thing I did was go to all my Yahoo groups and put NO EMAIL done. So that stops the problem in the future, now I must correct the present situation of using my Inbox to store messages like some archival program. Damn't I am an email hoarder and must stop! Yet another support group in the making!

Hey TT,
I can help ya if you are still havin' trouble.. Sputnik is on the right track tho'
Post or e-mail me if you need to. I did a couple of years as an I/S director and I own a computer biz here in the big east. There also is a way to archive your old e-mails and keep them if you need to be a pack rat with em' :)

Let me know

My friend got a duplicate copy with all the shit in it and saved it on my drive. We then weeded out somewhere in the neighborhood of 4,000 emails. Both in the inbox and sent items. Yet the "cloned" bad box still sits on the drive with it's edited cousin answering my mails.

My buddy claims that I have to "detent" or shrink the email program before something else happens or soon after ditching so many emails. I still have yet to do this. Have you heard of this before or am I not really explaining it well enough?

Thanks for all your replies and help. I do appreciate it.

My friend took care of it via his PC Anywhere hook up to my machine. All is cool now. Thanks for the effort. Sometimes I feel like a cave man with these damn machines!
