i started hanging for the first time tonight using
tom's swim cap method #1. everything seemed
to go fine. i ewas using a weight of 2.75 lbs.
i did a 20 min set with a 15 min rest, and then
back to 20 min again. when i took the cap off
(it had been on the whole time even during my
break), i noticed that my head was slightly blue
and fairly cold. i took a shower quickly to warm
things up. to be honest it was a little frightning
to see it in that condition! is this normal? or
did i maybe have the rubberbands too tight?
i know a lot of people use the bib hanger, but
for now this was cheap and seems to feel fine.
the only drawback was with the lack of blood.
i will try again next time taking the rubberband
off for the break.
does anyone have any advice on this matter?

You say that your penis was "blue and cold", no that's not normal, infact thats very serious. The reason why this happened is because you cut of all circulation to the head. Their is a way to prevent this, If you are a begginer, i suggest you hang for 15min and take a 10min rest, While you are on your rest take off the swim cap and start jelquing to force circulation within the penis. And remember, never hang while you have an erection, you could get injured badly!

-*Penis turns blue
You had two of the warning signs, you were lucky that you realized them. You are one of the few people who still does the swim-cap, many have switched to the Bib hanger. The good thing about the hanger is that it doesn't put all stress on the penis-head, also, using the swimcap may affect the nerves since many of them are directly beneath the head. You still can use the swim cap, just be careful.

thanks for the advice. yes, it was scary to see it in that condition.
i felt like i was in an episode of ER and quickly got to the shower to
resussitate it. even today it looks like the bottom part of it is still a
little bit discolored, very slightly purple. so i will give the hanging a rest
for a day and let it come back.
maybei should try the bib hanger. i have heard that a new one is being
developed, right? i choose the swimcap because it was the easiest to
get together, and over all was quick and comfortable to use. i am going
to try using less rubber bands this time, and like you said take it off and
get the blood back in it.
and yes, i am new. thanks for the welcome. this is a great board.

how about oif i put the riubberbands further up the shaft, away from
the head? maybe this would help.

Here is where you went wrong. Everything needs to come off when you are taking a rest period: rubber bands, swimcap, and all!! Leaving on the swimcap for much longer than 20 minutes can cause problems. As DoMil said, between hangs you should take measures to restore circulation. I recommend a hotwrap between hangs, and shake your penis out. After your last hang do a light jelq. The only reason why I don't recommend doing jelqs between swimcap hangs is that your member, especially the head, will swell slightly, and if you are using the "condom" method (which I use) it makes it quite painful to put back on. If you are using the other method, when some of the swelling subsides the cap may just simply fall off.

thanks for the info. do you think that i could have done any permanent damage
by leaving it on so long (about 45minutes)? I can't remember if this is the way i
always was, but the bottom have of my glans is a little more purple and a touch
pale compared to the top, which is more reddish in color. i would think that since the
bottom is more sensitive then the color would be different, maybe from a more
concentrated area of cappilaries causing the purple color. should i refrain from
haning for a few days to see if it clears up? i've been able to get an erection fine,
and there isnt any loss of feeling in that area, so other than the somewhat suspicious
coloring (like i said, i think i might have always been this way anyways, not something
you would really take a good look at until something like this happens), everything
seems to be normal. at this point i am just a little concerned, dont want any harm
done to the ol' boy of course! maybe i'll just do some jelqs for the next day or two
and make sure it has a good rest. but really i just want to know if that amount of
time could have done anything permanent (which again, functionally everything seems
fine, just the tint is in question).
thanks for any help here. i've deffienalty leanred a lesson to take things a little more
slow. im sure many people make the mistake of going a little too gung ho at first. but
right now my only concern is that my member hasnt been done any long term damage.
this may sound like im being a little too worried/paranoid, but then again it is an important
part of the body we're talking about!

If you would feel more at ease taking off the next couple of days, by all means do it. Better safe than sorry. Something that should be stressed that I haven't really seen stressed at this forum very much is that before you start doing any exercises, you should study and examine your penis carefully and know what it is supposed to look like. Get to know your cock, if you will. Of course in time your penis will change somewhat, become veinier, maybe darker in color, and of course larger.
If your penis still feels ok, you *probably* didn't do any permanent damage. You say you still have your sensitivity and have no problem with erections, so you should be ok. I suggest periodically doing hotwraps and maybe massaging your penis over the next couple of days.
I would like to add that after hanging with the swimcap, your penis head probably will be somewhat *cool* (and maybe slightly sore). But it shouldn't be blue and cold.

Thanks again for the help. I've been taking a look at everything down there
since the "incident" and I'm pretty sure that the way it looks now is the way
it was before. I've bene doing some jelqing in the shower and it seems to be
fine. i'm going to go back to hanging today but of course this time heeding
the advice you guys have given me.

That's the exact reason I stopped using the swimcap. You can't see what's going on while it's attached. With a home made hanger you can see and feel if everything is ok. You should be fine with the swim cap if you don't go too high in weight, I'd stop at around 7.5 pounds and use a hanger from then on. Heed the advice of the other gentlemen in this thread and you should be fine. The best thing to do when something like that happens is to stop, evaluate what caused the problem, ask questions, and make adjustments. Another tip is to find the tightness of wrapping the swimcap where it is loose enough to allow some circulation but tight enough to not fall off. (did that once, two 2.5 pound plates make a lot of noise, LOL) It's tough to do but if this were easy everyone would do it. Good Luck

yes i play on getting the bib naher once ive outgrown the swimcap. like
i said before it was a quick fix to just get me started. it might take me a
little to get the bib hanger constructed.
i am going to try putting the bands higher up and less tight like you said.
the first time i did it i was afraid the wieght would fall off and probably put
too much there.
